Why did it become popular?
Chickpeas and tahini from the ingredients in hummus have been used for centuries, and many cultures have claimed hummus.
Interest in this trend seems to increase even more in our country this year. Although hummus brings to mind the Mediterranean and the East since it is a legume product, the use of chickpea flour in various products is a valid trend for the whole world.
This was also influenced by the fact that the whole world is becoming increasingly sensitive to sustainability issues with vegan and vegetarian diets.
Vegetable protein sources will continue to make an exit; algae and insect protein have also become the subject of the coming years.
This recipe attracted attention because there is no refined sugar in it, there are no unhealthy fats, it is high in fiber, and it is easy to prepare.

TIPS FOR THE BEST CHOCOLATE HUMMUS:
- Remove the skin from the chickpeas for a creamier and more homogeneous result. It takes a little longer but it’s better to achieve that perfect texture and it’s also better for digestion. Anyway, if you prepare it with the skin nothing happens, it is incredible.
- Use unsweetened cocoa powder. Read the ingredients on the packaging. So you can adjust the level of sweet to your liking.
- Do it with freshly cooked chickpeas. Those that come in canned have a characteristic flavor that is not so convenient for this recipe.

What to accompany chocolate hummus with
To accompany this chocolate hummus we have two proposals. The first is fresh chopped fruit (banana and apple are two good options), ideal for those who do not want to add calories to this healthy dip. The second is a combination of slices of toast, grissini or mini biscuits, something more forceful and traditional reminiscent of the chocolate bread snacks of a lifetime. Which one do you stick with?
Delicious, healthy, and economical… It is both a source of protein and meets your sweet needs with the cocoa in its content. You can consume it by eating a spoonful of it, rubbing it on bread, or you can mix it with milk and making a smoothie.
What goes into the chocolate hummus?
Chickpeas – Canned chickpeas are already cooked, so you just need to rinse them and remove their skin.
Cocoa powder – We use unsweetened cocoa powder for this recipe, and the higher the quality, the better the overall taste. We prefer to control the level of sweetness with other ingredients.
Vanilla – We use vanilla extract. While vanilla extract can be considered optional, it enhances the flavor. Don’t want to use it or don’t have it? Do you have any leftover coffee from this morning? Add this in equal measure.
Salt – Salt balances the flavor of chocolates. It enhances its sweet aroma and reduces the bitterness of chocolate.
Chocolate chips – Melted chocolate chips add a richness to the sauce and are not really the same without it. Again, high-quality chocolate can make a difference in the overall taste.
Milk – Milk helps make this recipe creamy. You can use any type of milk you prefer, such as almond milk. Today we used whole cow’s milk for this recipe.

Ingredients
Instructions
-
If you are going to make chickpeas yourself, you will have to let them soak the night before in a container with water since they must be, at least, 12 hours submerged in water. Once the 12 hours have passed at least, drain and cook it in a pot for an hour and measure over medium-low heat.
-
Drain and let cool. However, if you want to make this recipe faster, we recommend the already cooked chickpeas that you can find in any supermarket.
-
The next step will be to prepare the tahini sauce, which simply contains sesame seeds. You just have to roast them over medium heat for five minutes and then pass it through the blender so that there is a paste. You can add a little oil to prepare this popular sauce of Arab origin.
-
Once the chickpeas and tahini sauce are ready (which you can also find already made), toast the hazelnuts for five minutes and crush them until a paste is left. You can add a teaspoon of the coconut oil to make the process easier.
-
Now add the cooked chickpeas next to the hazelnut paste and crush until a kind of thick sauce remains. Add brown sugar, cocoa, cinnamon powder, tahini sauce and vanilla essence. We keep mixing until everything is integrated.
-
If necessary, add a tablespoon of oil and a little water to create a smoother mixture.
-
Serve with toast or fruit. You'll love it!
